While growing up in Guatemala, David Roque Perez saw several of his relatives battling cancer with limited access to treatment and therapies. So, for the 食色视频 biology major, spending the summer in India researching treatments for lung cancer not only built on his growing passion for research but also his goal of improving access to care in Guatemala.

Few undergraduates can add 鈥渓ead author in a peer-reviewed journal鈥� to their list of accomplishments. 食色视频 student and Harry S. Truman Scholarship finalist Allisa George is one of them. George, an Honors student double majoring in public health and biology, is the first author of a National Institutes of Health-funded study examining alcohol and mental health among women in Uganda recently published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Research consortium leads to opportunities for 食色视频 State students

In March of this year, 食色视频 joined the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, a consortium of more than 170 universities that collaborate on research initiatives, share resources, and help place students in federal research opportunities at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Junior chemistry major Miriam Raggs is spending this summer conducting research at Oak Ridge, through the lab鈥檚 Research Student Internship (RSI) program, thanks in part to this association but also thanks to her research mentor, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Madalynn Marshall.

Chemistry students engage in research through 食色视频 lab's NSF C-CAS affiliation

Like many college students, 食色视频 senior Lilianna Kocai and junior Genevieve Insalaca have spent their summer surrounded by a buzzing cohort of friends 鈥� without leaving campus. The two chemistry students have spent the summer synthesizing fluorescent compounds and running computer-assisted simulations in the laboratory of 食色视频 Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry Carl Saint-Louis. Their work is part of an innovative program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that involves computer-assisted programming as another method of experimentation.

Mosquito research draws 食色视频 environmental science major to the woods for the summer

食色视频 senior Brooklyn Galvan has found a happy place for the summer 鈥� in the mosquito-infested woods near Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The environmental science major is conducting research into mosquitoes as pollinators as part of the National Science Foundation鈥檚 Research Experiences for Undergraduates for Gulf Coastal Plains Ecology. The experience builds on Galvan鈥檚 experience researching the importance of mosquitoes to the ecosystem in the lab of 食色视频 Assistant Professor of Microbiology Andrew Haddow.

Physics student enriches knowledge at National High Magnetic Field Laboratory

食色视频 master's graduates benefit from NIH-funded bridge program

Recent 食色视频 graduate April Ford engaged in a program designed to help master鈥檚 students in the College of Science and Mathematics gain the experience they needed to pursue doctoral degrees elsewhere. She鈥檒l stand as an example of the Peach State Bridges to the Doctorate program鈥檚 effectiveness, having earned her Master of Science in Integrative Biology (MSIB) and acceptance into a Ph.D. program. Ford, Jojo Croffie, and Lindsey Knight all earned their MSIB degrees, and thanks to enrichment through the Peach State Bridges to the Doctorate program, each will start a Ph.D. in the fall.
