15th Annual Pumpkin Launch

Please join us for the 15th Annual Pumpkin Launch, showcasing the designs and mechanisms built by sophomore mechanical engineering students. Fun and some good ole pumpkin splatter make this a Marietta campus tradition!

Date: Thursday, October 23, 2025

Sustainability at Pumpkin Launch

Here are some common questions about how the Pumpkin Launch event stays eco-friendly: from composting smashed pumpkins to repurposing trebuchet lumber. Learn how 食色视频 and its partners make sustainability part of the fun!

  • The 食色视频 Office of Sustainability partners with High Hog Farms for waste diversion from the landfill. This farmer employs the following sustainable waste management strategies:

    1. Composting
    2. Animal feed - for their sheep, chickens, rabbits, and/or horses
  • The Office of Sustainability partners with the Lifecycle Building Center (LBC) for waste diversion from the landfill. LBC employs the following sustainable waste management strategies:

Processed at their reuse center and given back to the community for utilization as a cost-effective and environmentally friendlier replacement for retail lumber

    1. Processed through their novel Nonprofit Material MATCH Program where in-kind material grants are donated to nonprofits in need of lumber for affordable housing projects, weatherization efforts, natural disaster relief, etc.
  • As all biowaste is compacted in landfills, biological decomposition occurs under anaerobic (absence of oxygen) conditions which generate methane gas. Methane gas is a potent heat-trapping greenhouse gas in our atmosphere. Biowastes also consume valuable space in landfills and decrease their operating lifespan capacities.

Composting of biowaste occurs under aerobic (presence of oxygen) conditions, reduces methane gas emissions, and generates a beneficial soil amendment, which is compost. Compost reduces soil erosion, aids in stormwater management, promotes healthier plant growth, conserves water, and improves soil health. Lumber that is repurposed and reused is more sustainable than landfilling.
