What is an Early Alert?

Early Alert allows faculty to provide academic feedback on student performance early in the semester, before mid-term grades are assigned. The intent is to give students a glimpse of their early performance and seek help (or adjust their habits) before it is too late to impact their final grade. Early Alert sends clear messages to students who frequently assume 鈥渘o news is good news鈥 if they have no indication of how they are performing at 食色视频. With Early Alert, students can get specific feedback on their progress. This alert encourages them to speak with their faculty and/or seek academic support services such as tutoring, SI, office hours, and more.  The points of contact are used to also encourage the student to seek academic/personal help and discuss their options.

Why should I submit an Early Alert?

  • Early Alerts address more than grades; they also highlight concerns such as academic effort, attendance, and class engagement.
  • Student success units reach out to students when an alert is made to open a dialogue, assess their needs, share available support options, and develop a plan that empowers them to succeed.
  • If a student is struggling in multiple courses, it may signal a larger issue, providing advisors with important insight to guide targeted intervention and support.
  • Data show that submitting Early Alerts promotes student success by connecting students with important campus resources and support services in a timely manner, allowing for earlier interventions that address academic or personal challenges.

Students with an early alert who engaged in student success services, including advising, the SMART Center, the Writing Center, Supplemental Instruction, and coaching, consistently earned higher GPAs and were more likely to reenroll the following semester than those who did not engage.

Early Alert Process

  • Faculty teaching flagged courses will receive an email from Sarah Matta with a link to their class roster(s) in Navigate beginning September 2nd.
  • All instructors are expected to complete the alert, even if no students are flagged as 鈥渁t risk.鈥
  • Please complete the Early Alerts using the link provided in the email to ensure they are counted as part of the campaign.
  • Submissions are due by 5 PM Friday, September 19th.
  • Faculty should let students know when an Early Alert has been submitted for them and explain that the purpose is to connect them with resources and support that can help address challenges and promote success in the course.

Alert Reasons

  • Attendance Concerns/No Online Course Engagement
  • Missing Assignments
  • Needs Time Management/Study Skills
  • Needs to Discuss Grade with Instructor
  • Needs Tutoring

Each alert type routes to a specific student success unit (advisors, coaches, peer educators) for targeted follow-up. Choosing only one reason helps streamline our outreach.

If students are doing well, faculty can also submit 鈥淗igh Fives鈥 to encourage them.
